4 Day Luxury Northern Kruger Park Safari
Our 4 Day Luxury Northern Kruger Park Safari is a luxury safari based at The Outpost, a beautiful, remote safari lodge overlooking the Levuvhu River in the community-owned Makuleke Conservancy in the far north of the Kruger National Park. This is one of Kruger Park's most breathtaking and remote locations, with beautiful scenery, good game viewing and fantastic birding opportunities.
Highlights
- Three nights at The Outpost
- Luxury accommodation
- Wild and remote wilderness
- Community-owned concession area
- Stunning views over the Luvuvhu River
- Excellent birding area
- Beautiful Baobab trees
- Fever-Tree forest
- Lanner Gorge
The Makuleke Conservancy is one of Kruger Park's success stories. The Makuleke community was displaced in the late 1960s in order to incorporate their land into the Kruger National Park. After a successful land claim in 1996, the Makuleke tribe chose to preserve the land for conservation and eco-tourism and decided not to resettle on their ancestral land. Today, the safari lodges that operate on this prime concession area of the Kruger National Park partner directly with the Makuleke community to ensure job creation and profit-sharing from sustainable eco-tourism.
This 4-day luxury safari package takes you to one of the most remote regions of Kruger, and to a beautiful safari lodge appropriately called The Outpost. Your stay here directly benefits the local Makuleke community.
Room Types
The Outpost offers four room types - bush view, treetop view, river view and the amazing honeymoon suite, with wraparound views of the surrounding wilderness landscape. The luxurious rooms can be fully opened up along the front.
Our top room tip for this luxury safari would be to try and secure the honeymoon suite, if available. The main difference between the rooms is the view. The honeymoon suite is situated right at the end, with the most glorious views over the Levuvhu River valley. Well worth the extra cost.
Day 1
Upon arrival at The Outpost, you will have the opportunity to settle in and enjoy lunch before heading out on your first afternoon game drive in an open safari vehicle. The game drive continues after dark with spotlights, searching for those elusive nocturnal animals. We return to the lodge for a delicious dinner.
Day 2 to 3
The daily itinerary follows a tried and tested routine: Wake up at dawn for a morning game drive. The early morning is the best time of the day for game viewing. You stand a chance of encountering lions or hyenas returning from their nightly hunting, and most animals start to become active as soon as the first light breaks. The bush is at its most beautiful at sunrise.
We return to the lodge for a mouth-watering breakfast. During the late morning, there may be an opportunity for a guided walk. Relax at the lodge during the heat of the day. Some of the rooms have a bush view, others have a majestic view over the Levuvhu River below (additional cost for the river view rooms). A siesta after lunch will refresh you after such an early morning start.
After high tea, the afternoon game drive departs. All game drives are conducted on open safari vehicles with a qualified English speaking guide.
A popular outing is to visit the scenic Fever Tree forest, where you can enjoy a forest walk or a picnic.
Northern Kruger is a great destination for true safari lovers. It is more quiet than the busy southern part of Kruger, and the guests who enjoy this part of Kruger typically don't come with an expectation to tick the "Big Five" off a checklist or rush from one predator sighting to the next. Elephants and nyala antelope are common in the far north. Birding is also excellent. The landscape here is dramatic and the area is rich in geological and archaeological treasures.
A highlight is the remote and beautiful Lanner Gorge, where the Levuvhu River has carved a scenic gorge through the Pafuri landscape.
Day 4
You may choose to sleep in this morning or head out on another early morning game drive to search for any animals you may still hope to see. After breakfast, it is time to check out and return to Johannesburg.
Getting to The Outpost
The package price listed below does not include transport to the lodge. There are three ways to get to The Outpost. For those on a tight budget, it is possible to rent a car and drive yourself to the lodge or book a 7-hour road transfer from Johannesburg.
However, most guests fly in. For ease of comfort, we recommend spending a little bit more and flying from Johannesburg directly to the lodge's remote airstrip at Pafuri and back. Please request return flights to The Outpost to be included in your quote if you prefer the fly-in safari option.
As always, this itinerary is flexible. The safari can be shortened or lengthened, and we can easily add other destinations or lodges to your trip.
