Remote Wilderness Meets Responsible Luxury
The Makuleke Concession is a conservation success story. This corner of the Kruger was returned to the Makuleke people in 1996, after they were displaced in the 1960s. Instead of resettling, the community chose to protect their land and partner with safari operators to create sustainable tourism and long-term job opportunities.
Located within this community-owned conservancy, The Outpost offers a high-end safari experience in one of the most remote areas of Kruger National Park. This is big sky, big view country – a place for safari lovers who value wildness, quiet and a deeper connection with nature.
Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrival & First Game Drive

Stopping for refreshments on safari
Arrive at The Outpost in time for lunch and a relaxed check-in. That afternoon, set out on your first game drive in an open safari vehicle, guided by an experienced ranger. Afternoon drives continue after sunset, with spotlights used to find nocturnal species. Dinner is served back at the lodge under the stars.
Days 2 & 3 – Game Drives, Guided Walks & Exploring the North

Exploring Northern Kruger on foot
Your daily routine includes an early morning game drive, timed for when wildlife is most active. Sightings may include elephant, nyala, buffalo, giraffe, and predators like lion and hyena. The north is also known for rare species such as eland and Sharpe's grysbok.
After breakfast, there's time to relax, or you may have the chance to join a bush walk (conditions permitting). The afternoon is yours to enjoy – relax in your room with its wide-open views, take a siesta or explore the surrounding wilderness.
Later, enjoy afternoon tea before heading out on your second game drive of the day. One of the standout excursions is a visit to the Fever-Tree forest – a surreal, green-lit grove where guided walks and scenic picnics bring the landscape to life.
The far north is a birder's paradise, especially in summer. Expect to see specials like Pel's fishing owl, racket-tailed roller, and broad-billed roller. Lanner Gorge is another highlight, where the Levuvhu River has carved a deep gorge through the sandstone cliffs — a dramatic and unforgettable spot.
Day 4 – Optional Morning Drive & Departure

Enjoy the view from your room before checking out
Enjoy a final early morning game drive (time permitting) or sleep in before breakfast and check-out. From here, return to Johannesburg by air or road.
Getting To The Outpost
There are three ways to reach The Outpost:
- Self-drive: Rent a car and drive approximately 7 hours from Johannesburg.
- Private road transfer: A convenient, comfortable option if you don't want to drive yourself.
- Fly-in safari: The easiest and fastest way is to fly directly from Johannesburg to the lodge's airstrip at Pafuri. Let us know if you'd like us to include return flights in your quote.

Choose Your View: Room Types at The Outpost
The Outpost offers four room categories, each with open-fronted designs and uninterrupted views over the surrounding wilderness. All rooms are spacious, stylish, and elevated above the landscape — the main difference is their outlook and position along the ridge.
Positioned lower down near the main lodge, these rooms overlook the surrounding bushveld. They offer a slightly more sheltered setting with great views and easy access to the main area.
Set among the ironwood trees, these rooms feel tucked away in the canopy. Expect more privacy, filtered views of the valley, and a sense of immersion in the surrounding bush.
Higher up the ridge, these rooms face out across the Luvuvhu River. The views are wide and open, ideal for guests looking to make the most of the lodge's elevated setting.
The highest and most private of all, this premium suite offers panoramic wraparound views. If it's available, we recommend upgrading — the scenery alone is worth it.
