Moremi Game Reserve Travel Guide
Moremi Game Reserve Travel Guide
Moremi Game Reserve is one of Botswana's best Big Five wildlife destinations. The lodges in the Moremi Game Reserve typically offer a combination of 4x4 game drives and boat trips on the waterways of the Okavango Delta. Excellent land- and water-based game viewing and its close proximity to Maun make Moremi Game Reserve a wonderful Southern African safari destination.
Highlights
- Excellent game viewing
- Combination of land- and water-based activities
- Selection of good safari lodges
- Access via a short flight from Maun, or a four-hour road transfer
- Gateway to the Okavango Delta
Botswana's Moremi Game Reserve has a number of great safari lodges, most notably Camp Moremi, Xakanaxa Camp and Khwai River Lodge just on the outskirts of Moremi. Okuti Camp is also in the Moremi Game Reserve, but we are hesitant to recommend this camp. These camps all use the network of roads within the reserve for game drives, and the game viewing is excellent. No off-road driving or night drives are permitted inside Moremi. However, Khwai River Lodge has access to a small private concession area just outside Moremi, where they do night drives.
Game viewing activities
In Botswana, you'll generally find that the lodges situated inside the national parks and government game reserves are less expensive, and offer no night drives or off-road driving, and often no bush walks. The lodges that are situated in private concession areas are usually more expensive, but they can offer night drives, bush walks and are able to drive off-road during game drives.
Big Five reserve
Moremi is a Big Five reserve, although currently only Chief's Island, deep in the Delta, has rhino following a successful rhino reintroduction programme. In other parts of Moremi, you can expect to see elephant, buffalo, lion and possibly leopard and wild dog as well.
Cheetah are rare but they have been sighted here. General game includes giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, kudu, lechwe, puku, hartebeest, sable antelope, impala, waterbuck, baboon and monkey, warthog, hippo and crocodile.
Our take on Moremi Game Reserve
Moremi is wild, remote and beautiful, and offers some of the best land- and water-based game viewing in Southern Africa. We can highly recommend Moremi Game Reserve as a great safari destination.
