This small-group Kenya safari combines Amboseli, Tsavo East and Tsavo West in one well-paced journey through some of Kenya's most important elephant habitats and wilderness landscapes. Designed as an affordable introduction to safari travel, the route focuses less on high-density predator viewing and more on scenic diversity, elephant encounters and experiencing the scale of Kenya's southern safari regions.

This safari offers a very different experience from Kenya's more traditional Maasai Mara-focused safari routes. Instead of concentrating on predator sightings and migration herds, the Amboseli & Tsavo Safari explores Kenya's vast southern wilderness areas, where elephants, landscapes and conservation stories take centre stage.

The itinerary combines Amboseli National Park with Tsavo East and Tsavo West, three parks that together form one of Africa's most important elephant ecosystems. Amboseli is famous for its large tuskers and iconic views of Mount Kilimanjaro, while Tsavo's immense size, red-dust elephants and remote wilderness atmosphere create a slower, more open-ended safari experience.

Tsavo in particular rewards travellers who appreciate space, scenery and a stronger sense of wilderness. Wildlife sightings can sometimes require more patience than in smaller reserves, but the scale and diversity of the ecosystem are part of what make the region so distinctive.

The safari also connects with important conservation work in the Tsavo ecosystem. Tsavo East is home to two of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's elephant reintegration units at Voi and Ithumba, where orphaned elephants are gradually reintroduced back into the wild after being rescued and rehabilitated.

Accommodation is typically in comfortable mid-range safari lodges located inside or close to the parks. While exact lodges may occasionally vary due to seasonal availability, the overall route and safari experience remain consistent.

Typical Route

Nairobi → Tsavo East → Tsavo West → Amboseli → Nairobi

This Kenya safari typically runs for 6 to 7 nights, depending on seasonal routing, accommodation availability and departure schedules.

Because this is a scheduled small-group safari, the order of parks or accommodation used may occasionally vary between departures. These adjustments are sometimes necessary due to lodge availability, operational logistics or seasonal conditions.

The overall safari experience, however, remains much the same. The itinerary is designed around a logical southern Kenya safari route linking Tsavo East, Tsavo West and Amboseli in a well-paced sequence focused on elephants, landscapes and classic East African safari scenery.

Any accommodation substitutions are typically of a similar standard and are selected to maintain the quality of the safari experience and maximise time in the wildlife areas.

Why This Safari Route Works

One of the strengths of this itinerary is the way it combines three very different safari environments within southern Kenya.

Tsavo East introduces travellers to Kenya's vast semi-arid wilderness landscapes, known for red elephants, open plains and large-scale safari scenery. Tsavo West adds a more varied volcanic landscape with rocky hills, springs and denser vegetation, while Amboseli provides easier wildlife viewing and some of Africa's most recognisable views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Together, these parks create a safari that feels diverse and immersive without requiring domestic flights or extremely long travel days.

The route also works particularly well for travellers interested in elephants and conservation-focused safari experiences rather than exclusively seeking predator sightings.

When operated in reverse, the itinerary can also combine very naturally with Kenya's coast for a bush-and-beach safari extension to destinations such as Diani Beach, Watamu or Mombasa.

Accommodation

Accommodation on this safari is generally in comfortable 4-star safari lodges and tented camps located either inside the parks or close to the main wildlife areas.

Most stays are on a full-board basis while on safari, and rooms are en-suite with standard modern comforts. Depending on seasonal availability and departure dates, accommodation may vary between similar properties of a comparable standard.

This safari works particularly well for travellers wanting an affordable, well-organised Kenya safari without sacrificing comfort or safari experience.

This safari can also be customised to suit your preferred travel dates, budget and travel style.

Day 1 – Arrive in Nairobi

Arrive in Nairobi, where you'll be met and transferred to your hotel.

Depending on your arrival time, you may have an opportunity to relax after your flight or explore parts of the city before the safari begins.

Overnight: Nairobi (Bed & Breakfast)

Days 2–3 – Tsavo East National Park

Travel southeast from Nairobi to Tsavo East National Park, one of Kenya's oldest and largest protected wildlife areas.

Tsavo East is known for its vast open landscapes, seasonal rivers, large elephant herds and distinctive red soil that gives the park's elephants their famous colour. The park also supports lion, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and a wide variety of birdlife, although wildlife densities are generally lower and more spread out than in smaller safari reserves.

Spending two nights here allows time to properly explore the park and appreciate the scale and wilderness character of the Tsavo ecosystem.

Tsavo East is also closely linked to elephant conservation in Kenya and is home to two of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's elephant reintegration units.

Overnight: Tsavo East (Full Board)

Day 4 – Tsavo West National Park

Continue to Tsavo West National Park, a more mountainous and scenic section of the greater Tsavo ecosystem.

The landscapes here differ noticeably from Tsavo East, with volcanic hills, rocky outcrops, springs and denser vegetation creating a more varied safari environment. Wildlife may include elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, lion and black rhino, although sightings often require patience due to the thicker bush.

The park is also known for Mzima Springs and the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, important conservation areas within Tsavo West.

Overnight: Tsavo West (Full Board)

Days 5–6 – Amboseli National Park

Continue to Amboseli National Park at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Amboseli is one of Kenya's best parks for elephant viewing and is particularly famous for its large tuskers and open landscapes. The relatively sparse vegetation often makes wildlife easier to spot than in Tsavo, while the backdrop of Kilimanjaro creates some of East Africa's most iconic safari scenery.

Game drives focus on the park's marshes, plains and seasonal wetlands where elephant, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and a variety of birdlife are commonly seen.

Optional activities may include cultural visits or hot air balloon excursions.

Overnight: Amboseli (Full Board)

Day 7 – Amboseli to Nairobi

Enjoy a final morning game drive in Amboseli before returning to Nairobi, where the safari ends.

Depending on onward plans, travellers can either connect with international flights or continue to other destinations within Kenya.

Optional Activities

Depending on the departure and season, optional activities may include:

  • Hot air balloon safaris in Amboseli
  • Maasai cultural visits
  • Nairobi sightseeing before or after the safari
  • Kenya coast beach extensions

Who This Safari Suits

This itinerary works particularly well for:

  • first-time safari travellers
  • elephant lovers
  • travellers wanting an affordable Kenya safari
  • visitors interested in conservation and wilderness landscapes
  • travellers preferring quieter safari regions
  • safari and beach combination travellers

This safari involves long overland drives through large wilderness areas. Wildlife viewing in Tsavo can feel less concentrated than in smaller reserves such as the Maasai Mara, but the scale, scenery and quieter safari atmosphere are part of what make the region so rewarding.

Safari routing and accommodation may occasionally vary due to seasonal conditions, operational logistics or lodge availability. Any substitutions are typically of a similar standard and are made to maintain the overall safari experience.

Small-group Departures & Tailor-made Options

This safari operates as a scheduled small-group tour with a maximum of seven guests per vehicle, ensuring everyone has a guaranteed window seat.

Because Kenya safaris are often planned well in advance, confirmed departure dates and routing are not always released far ahead of time and may vary between seasons. Please contact us for the latest confirmed departure dates and availability.

If your preferred travel dates do not match one of the scheduled departures, we can often suggest a similar safari departure or tailor a comparable Kenya safari around your timing, budget and travel style.

Many travellers also use this itinerary as a starting point for a more customised safari. Accommodation upgrades, private guiding, domestic flights and Kenya coast extensions can all be added to create a more exclusive or flexible safari experience.
