Day 1 to 4

Cape Town

Arrive in Cape Town, where you will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel in Cape Town. If you prefer a self-drive tour, you can either pick up your rental car at the airport or we can have it delivered to your hotel. Accommodation in Cape Town is quoted on Bed and Breakfast basis, but other meals can be added upon request. The choice of hotel will depend on availability for your dates of travel, and the level of luxury you have in mind. We work with a variety of hand-picked, quality hotels ranging from budget level boutique hotels to luxury 5-star hotels. Lunches and dinners can be enjoyed at the hotel or at one of the many choice restaurants in Cape Town or at the Waterfront. If you prefer a fully inclusive price, we can include all meals and activities into your itinerary upon request.

The price estimate shown below is based on a mid-range tour with 4-star accommodation throughout, and includes a Group E automatic rental car (Toyota Corolla Quest or similar) for the first four days in Cape Town. For guests who prefer a privately guided tour, we will arrange a private vehicle and guide for you and adjust your quote to a fully guided tour. Self-drive clients will get a detailed travel guide and self-drive tips for Cape Town. Please let us know when you send an enquiry whether you prefer to do the Cape Town leg of this tour on a self-drive or fully guided basis.

Four nights in Cape Town gives you three full days to explore the city and surrounding area. Cape Town offers an incredible variety of attractions and activities to choose from. Here are some of the popular activities and day tours you can enjoy in the Cape Town area. Note that these day tours and activities are optional extras that can easily be added to your itinerary upon request, or if you're doing a self-drive tour you can do them on your own, at your own pace. These activities are not included in the cost estimate below:

  • City Sightseeing Bus — a hop-on, hop-off bus tour of the city and surrounding area on a red topless bus with interesting commentary (in various languages) of all the city's main attractions and landmarks. This ticket is also a good way to get around and travel to the main attractions in and around Cape Town, including Camps Bay Beach.
  • Sundowners on Signal Hill.
  • A visit to the top of Table Mountain (either by cableway, guided hike, or unguided hike) for Africa's most famous and breathtaking views.

  • A visit to Robben Island by ferry to view the prison where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, now a museum and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Cape Winelands Tour — a self-drive trip, or a privately guided day tour, or a scheduled group tour of the Cape winelands, visiting some of the top wine estates in the country. Enjoy a cellar tour and wine tasting, and stroll through the historic towns of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, nestled between the mountains and famous for their beautiful scenery and world-class vineyards.
  • Cape Peninsula Tour — drive yourself or book a privately guided day tour or scheduled group tour of the Cape Peninsula, visiting Cape Point National Park, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. This scenic day tour takes you past Hout Bay, where you can add a short boat trip to view a seal colony on a nearby island (optional). We also drive along the scenic Chapman's Peak Drive, which is cut into the mountain and winds its way along the dramatic Atlantic coastline. After visiting the Cape of Good Hope at Cape Point National Park, we return along the other side of the peninsula and visit Boulders Beach, with its resident penguin colony.

  • A guided Township Tour and a District Six tour, an unforgettable cultural and historic experience.
  • A whale-watching day trip to Hermanus (seasonal).
  • Shark cage diving day trip (seasonal).
  • Hot air balloon flight (weather dependent).
  • A visit to Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.
  • A guided, historic walking tour of the city
  • A Bo-Kaap Cooking Tour, a culinary cultural experience in the colourful Bo-Kaap community.
  • Adventure activities: quad biking or sand boarding in the dunes; zipline tour; hiking and scrambling up to the top of Lions Head.
  • The V&A Waterfront and the Two Oceans Aquarium
  • The famous GOLD Restaurant, an African cultural and culinary experience like no other.
  • And lots more.

Please note that four nights in Cape Town will not be enough time to do all the above activities. None of these day tours and activity ideas are included in the price estimate below. The tour can be customised to suit your available time and budget, and when you request a quote we will discuss these options with you and add whatever day tours or activities you wish to include to your quote.

If you want to spend more time in Cape Town, we can easily customise the itinerary and add additional nights, on request.

Day 5 - 8

Kruger National Park

On the morning of Day 5, you will drop off your rental car at Cape Town International Airport. If you're doing this tour on a fully guided basis, you will be collected from your hotel and transferred to the airport for your flight to the Kruger National Park. There are direct daily flights from Cape Town to three different airports in the greater Kruger Park region: Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (MQP), Skukuza Airport (SKZ), and Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport (HDS). Which airport you fly to will depend on the choice of lodge for the safari leg of your trip. You will be met at the airport on arrival and transferred to the Kruger National Park to start your safari.

The next four nights are devoted to game viewing in the greater Kruger Park, South Africa's most famous safari destination. Kruger is a year round safari destination, home to the famous "Big Five" and boasting the greatest variety of mammal species in the world.

For your safari in the Kruger National Park, we offer multiple accommodation options, depending on your budget. The most affordable option is to join one of our scheduled Kruger Park safaris, like the 5-Day Best of Kruger Safari, which the Budget Option cost estimate is based on. This is a guided small group safari with set departure dates, and the safari includes all game drives, entrance fees, brunch and dinner daily. We do not recommend doing Kruger on a self-drive basis, so this leg of the tour will be fully guided.

Alternatively, you could spend these four nights at a private safari lodge in the Greater Kruger National Park. At a private game lodge, all meals and game drives are included in the cost. The choice of accommodation will depend on whether you select the Budget Option, Mid-range Option, or Luxury Option. A rough cost estimate for each of these price levels is provided below.

The price estimate shown below is based on a mid-range price option. If you prefer to be quoted a budget price option for this tour, let us know in your initial enquiry. For the budget option, the first four nights will include a budget-friendly hotel in Cape Town, and the the last four nights will include either our guided 5-day Best of Kruger safari, or a budget-friendly private safari lodge within Greater Kruger. We can also arrange a smaller, more affordable rental car for you in Cape Town, which costs less than a group E automatic.

For the mid-range price option, the price estimate is given below. The first four nights will include a mid-range 4-star hotel in Cape Town, and the last four nights will be at a mid-range private safari lodge (4-star lodge) within Greater Kruger. Cape Town can be done either on a self-drive basis or a fully guided basis (fully guided costs more).

If you select the luxury option, the first four nights will be at a luxury 5-star hotel in Cape Town, and the last four nights on safari will be at a luxury private safari lodge (5-star lodge) within Greater Kruger. Typically, the luxury price option is fully guided throughout.

Day 9

Today we enjoy a final early morning game drive, followed by breakfast. After breakfast, we make our way to the exit gate and back to Johannesburg International Airport (if you join the 5-day Best of Kruger safari) or, if the last four nights are at a private safari lodge, we will drop you at the nearest airport (Skukuza, Nelspruit KMIA, or Hoedspruit airport) on the final day. Your onward flight to Johannesburg or Cape Town is not included. Wherever your fly home from, it is best not to book an international flight departing before 9 pm (21h00) on the last day.

Customise this trip idea

This is a trip idea and the itinerary is very flexible.

  • You can change the number of days you spend in Cape Town and Kruger Park.
  • You can opt for a private safari lodge experience instead of joining our 5-Day Best of Kruger Safari for the second half of this trip.
  • You can do Cape Town on a self-drive basis or fully guided basis.
  • The choice of accommodation is flexible. We will make recommendations based on the level of luxury you prefer.
  • The program in Cape Town is flexible. We can include any day tours and activities you want us to include.

Approximate cost

The final cost will depend on the choice of accommodation and the day tours and activities you wish to include. The estimated rates below include an estimated airfare for the price of the flight from Cape Town to Kruger on Day 5. Airfares are subject to change so this is merely an estimate.
