4 Day Kruger Park Budget Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival & First Game Drive

Your adventure begins with a morning departure (around 07:00) from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg or a nearby airport hotel. After a scenic 5-hour drive, we arrive at Kruger National Park.

At the entrance gate, we switch from our air-conditioned minibus to an open safari vehicle, ensuring optimal game viewing from the moment we enter the park. En route to our rest camp, keep an eye out for a variety of wildlife, including impala, kudu, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, elephant, hippo, and possibly even lions or leopards.

We arrive at camp by sunset, check into our comfortable en-suite bungalows, and enjoy a traditional South African braai (barbecue) or a meal at the camp restaurant.

Day 2: Morning & Afternoon Safari Drives

Game viewing in Kruger National Park

Each morning, we set off on a game drive at sunrise, the best time for wildlife activity. No two drives are ever the same, offering unique encounters with Kruger National Park's diverse animals. Early morning is one of the best times for game viewing, as predators are still active from the night. We'll search for:

  • Hyenas returning to their dens
  • Lions finishing off their nighttime kills
  • Elephants, rhinos, buffalo, and antelope grazing in the morning light

After a mid-morning breakfast at a picnic site or back at camp, you can enjoy leisure time—relax by the swimming pool, browse the curio shop, watch wildlife from the deck, or take an afternoon siesta. Lunch is at your own expense and can be purchased from the camp's deli.

In the afternoon, we embark on another exciting game drive. As the heat of the day fades and the sun sets over the African bush, the animals become more active again, making it an ideal time for Big 5 sightings. Stops at scenic viewpoints and waterholes provide excellent photo opportunities. Dinner is served in camp.

Evening options: Pre-book a night drive (extra cost), guided by Kruger Park rangers using powerful spotlights to search for leopards, bush babies, and nocturnal predators.

Day 3: Another Full Safari Day or Optional Panorama Route Tour

Authentic Kruger Park Experience I Wild Wings Safaris

We rise early to make the most of the prime game-viewing hours. As the sun rises, the bush comes alive, and we set out in search of wildlife that may have eluded us so far.

One of the most exciting aspects of a game drive is that you never know what you'll find. Every drive is unique—perhaps we saw a herd of giraffes yesterday, but today, we may see them drinking at a waterhole, engaging in a dominance battle, or feeding on thorny acacia trees with astonishing ease.

This is where our expert safari guides truly shine. Their deep knowledge of the bush transforms each drive into a rich and immersive experience. With a trained eye for tracking wildlife and years of experience interpreting animal behaviour, they know where to look and what subtle signs to watch for. They'll share fascinating stories, insights, and lesser-known facts about the animals, plants, and ecosystems of Kruger National Park—turning every sighting into a moment of discovery.

Mid-morning, we stop at a scenic picnic site or return to camp for a hearty breakfast before enjoying some leisure time. Later in the day, as temperatures cool, we head out again for another thrilling safari. With fresh tracks and new clues to follow, the afternoon drive brings fresh opportunities—perhaps a leopard resting in the shade, a herd of elephants at a waterhole, or lions stirring from their midday slumber.

After sunset, we return to camp for a well-earned dinner, recounting the day's highlights under the African night sky.

Optional Extra: On Day 3, you can swap your game drives for a scenic Panorama Route tour (extra cost), visiting:

  • God's Window – Breathtaking views over the Lowveld
  • Blyde River Canyon – One of the world's largest green canyons
  • Bourke's Luck Potholes – Fascinating natural rock formations

If you choose the Panorama Route, you'll return to camp by sunset.

Day 4: Final Safari & Return to Johannesburg

Enjoy a final sunrise game drive, with a chance to spot African wild dogs or a rare leopard. After breakfast, we exit the park and return to Johannesburg (arrival: 17:00 - 18:00). Drop-off in Nelspruit is also available.

Important Safari Notes

  • If you can spare an extra day, we highly recommend this 4-day safari over the 3-day option, as it gives you two full days of game drives instead of just one.
  • Travel time from Johannesburg to Kruger is 5-6 hours. Flights between Johannesburg and Kruger can be arranged (extra cost).
  • Availability is limited – Book early to avoid disappointment!
  • Compare before you book – Not all Kruger safaris offer the same value. Check out our Guide to Comparing Safaris for helpful tips.
