The Ngorongoro Crater, a caldera or collapsed volcano, is world-renowned for its spectacular scenery and abundance of wildlife. You're almost certain to see all of the Big Five, a wide range of antelope, crocodile, hippo, zebra and critically endangered black rhino on a day trip into the crater. Ngorongoro is a favourite stop on most Tanzanian Northern Circuit safaris and many opt to stay in one of the accommodation spots in the beautiful highland area around Karatu just outside Ngorongoro.
Most travellers going through Ngorongoro are on organised tours and have their own 4x4s and guides. The breathtaking scenery and incredibly abundant wildlife in the crater is not to be missed. A visit to the Ngorongoro Crater, however, is not the only attraction in the area. There is plenty to see and do.
There are a number of walks and hikes in and around the Ngorongoro Karatu area to suit a wide range of fitness levels. Visit Ngorongoro Crater's smaller sister at Empakaai. Walk up Mount Oldeani and look at the view of Serengeti one way, the crater highlands another and Lake Manyara the third. Meet the local people and learn about their cultures and traditions on a village walk. Or soak up the delicious aromas while walking through the coffee plantations.
