Recently renovated, Arathusa is a popular safari lodge situated in an excellent area for game viewing.
There are 9 centrally located plains-facing suites and 4 remote bush-facing suites. Each suite has an en-suite bathroom, verandah and outdoor private shower. They are all air-conditioned, and the comfortable twin or king size beds are protected by mosquito nets. No two suites are alike with regards to interior decor, but they are all spacious and designed to let in light. The 4 bush-facing suites each have their own private plunge pool.
Excellent Game Area
Game drives are conducted on open safari vehicles in the early morning and in the late afternoon and the Big 5 are regularly seen. Their traversing area is in the northern Sabi Sand Game Reserve, which is known for providing superb game sightings. The afternoon game drive continues after sunset as a night drive, using spotlights to find those elusive nocturnal animals like leopard and honey badger. A guided bush walk with an armed ranger is also conducted each day after breakfast.
Luxurious Main Area
The central lounge and dining areas are open-sided under thatch, bringing the outside in. The furniture and decor help create an ambience of plush African luxury. The lounge area flows to the outside deck and rim-flow swimming pool overlooking the waterhole. There is also a separate thatched deck overlooking the open plains, where you can enjoy breakfast, or simply a quiet moment of bird-watching or game viewing.
By air: Airlink operates three flights in and out of Arathusa daily. A number of flights from OR Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg), Cape Town International and King Shaka International (Durban) connect to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA near Nelspruit) and Eastgate Airport (Hoedspruit). Arathusa will arrange your transfers to and from the lodge.
By road: It's about a 6-hour drive from Johannesburg and road transfers are available.
Our take on Arathusa
Arathusa is popular for very good reason. As a 4-star lodge, it's well priced and offers a fantastic overall safari experience for those on a mid-range budget. The lodge has a stunning location and the view over the plains is one of its main selling points. The food is good and we have found that the owners and managers are very responsive to guest feedback. We have no hesitation in recommending this lodge.
