The Far Northern Kruger is best reached either by flying into Polokwane or Phalaborwa and driving north, or by a full-day self-drive from Johannesburg via the Pafuri or Punda Maria Gates.

How to Get to the Far Northern Kruger

The Far Northern Kruger, including the Pafuri and Makuleke regions, is one of the park's most remote and least-visited areas. Reaching it takes some planning:

Driving to the Far Northern Kruger

From Johannesburg, expect 7–9 hours depending on your chosen gate. Pafuri Gate is the northernmost entry, while Punda Maria Gate offers access to the central-north region.

Flying to the Far Northern Kruger

You can fly from Johannesburg to Polokwane or Phalaborwa, then drive the remaining 4–6 hours. Charter flights to airstrips near luxury camps are available for a faster (but pricier) option.

What to Expect on the Journey

Major highways are good, but inside the park, roads are slower with frequent game-viewing stops.
