More about this accommodation
Londolozi Game Reserve is a 14 000-hectare (34 580 acres) wildlife paradise situated on the Sand River, in the heart of the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, which shares an unfenced border with the Kruger National Park.
Private, exclusive wildlife sanctuary
Londolozi is often described as the original South African safari destination, with a reputation for excellence. Londolozi was created by brothers Dave and John Varty whose commitment to wildlife preservation and nature conservation is world renowned, and who have helped with several wildlife documentaries. Meaning "protector of all living things" in Zulu, Londolozi is home to the famous Big 5 and is also said to have the best leopard viewing in their natural environment.
Pioneer - the Original
Pioneer Camp is situated in the area where the Varty ancestors originally pitched their tents, more than 80 years ago. The camp still exudes an atmosphere of history and heritage. Combining an old English colonial feel with contemporary African style, a sense of history has been re-created with faithfully-restored memorabilia of period photographs, antique suitcases, silver, crystal glass and gramophones. The social centre is the open-plan living area which consists of a kitchen, sitting room and dining area, which offer spectacular views of the surrounding bush and river.
The air-conditioned suites all feature a hearth and a romantic sala (intimate covered deck) and are fitted with chandeliers and comfortable heavy wooden beds. The classic Victorian en-suite bathrooms have modern accents with superior finishes and feature indoor and outdoor showers. The camp is also very adaptable and can be converted into a private bush home for families or groups of 6-14 people via linking glass sky walkways into interconnected family units.
Activities at the camp centre round the twice daily game-drives in open vehicles, led by the highly skilled game rangers and trackers. Other memorable activities include moonlit bush dinners, private bush breakfasts, guided stargazing trips and visits to the local Shangaan Cultural village. Escape the heat of the hot African sun in the Zen lap pool and enjoy sumptuous food from the organic, free range menu.
