Eco-friendly tented camp with endless views of the Serengeti
Offering uninterrupted views of the Serengeti, Ehlane Plains Camp's eight canvas tents are spacious and well-appointed with net-covered king- or twin-size beds, bedside tables and lamps. The lounge areas have cosy sofas and coffee tables and the en-suite bathrooms have a shower, two basins and a flush toilet.
One of the eight canvas tents, the Family Suite, can accommodate small groups or families. Two tents, called Stargazer Suites, are set up like Arabian 'star domes' with an open rooftop for stargazing at night. The Lion's Den is a honeymoon suite with a stargazing platform. All eight tents are spaced well apart for privacy.
Inviting guest lounge and dining area
The lounge and bedouin-inspired dining area at Ehlane Plains Camp can be found in the centre of the camp where guests gather for meals and to socialize. Meals are either served in the dining area which is open to the cool plains breeze or by the campfire under the stars. Free WiFi is available in the main area.
Ehlane Plains Camp is a permanent camp that remains open throughout the year except during the rainy season in April and May. In keeping with the camp's environmentally-friendly ethos, well water is collected in the national park, solar panels provide electricity and careful attention is paid to reducing the footprint on the surrounding habitat.
Great year-round game viewing opportunities
Ehlane Plains Camp is situated in the Soit le Motonyi region of the Serengeti which has one of the highest densities of cheetahs in the area comparable to Ndutu. And because of the camp's remote location away from the Serengeti transit area, game drives are relaxed and uncrowded.
Safari-goers can expect to see zebra, giraffe, elephant, black rhino, wildebeest, buffalo, African wild dog and warthog as well as large packs of hyena and a strong concentration of lion, cheetah, and the occasional leopard. Smaller cats such as serval, caracal and African wildcat are also prevalent throughout the area.
With incredible resident predator action taking place all year round, there is no bad time to stay at Ehlane Plains Camp, but guests interested in witnessing the annual wildebeest migration should book a tent from October to May and from June to September.
By air - Ehlane Plains Camps is best reached by flying from Arusha Airport, Gogatende Airport, Manyara Airport or Kilimanjaro Airport to the Seronera Airstrip. The road transfer from the Seronera Airstrip to Ehlane Plains Camp takes 1.5 hours with game viewing along the way.
Our take on Ehlane Plains Camp
Ehlane Plains Camp is the perfect place to stay if you want to wake up in the mornings to uninterrupted views of the Serengeti plains on all sides. The staff are wonderful, the meals are well prepared and full of flavour, and game drives are private and intimate, far from the hustle and bustle of the busier spots in the Serengeti. That's because very few people know about the eastern Serengeti's Soit Le Motonyi region which was closed to visitors for 20 years for research into the Big Cats. In fact, Soit Le Motonyi is now one of the best (and most tourist-free) places to see cheetah in the Serengeti.
