Canyon Roadhouse presents a refreshing oasis in the arid and remote desert region north of the Hobas viewpoint overlooking the immense Fish River Canyon.

Quirky Accommodation

The roadhouse rooms open out onto small courtyards planted with indigenous, desert-adapted plants. The twin and family rooms are simple yet cool and spacious, providing a comfortable retreat complete with modern amenities, including electric fans, air-conditioning, tea and coffee stations and mosquito nets. The en-suite bathrooms feature wash basins, flush toilets and hot water showers.

Canyon Roadhouse Facilities

At Canyon Roadhouse guests dine in a bygone era, seated between old cars and tractors used to creatively furnish and create a sense of nostalgia. Freshly picked vegetables and herbs, straight from the gardens, are used to prepare tasty meals. Breakfast buffets and à la carte lunches and dinners are served in the informal restaurant and out on the terrace. The motoring theme continues in the bar area where cold drafts are served at the filling station (pompstasie) counter. Time stands still amid the memorabilia; the sense of being in the middle of nowhere taking hold at this playfully recreated roadhouse.

Things to Do and See

Explore the natural wonder of the Fish River Canyon and the dramatic landscapes around it on a guided drive. Trace the edge of the canyon, stopping at two viewpoints along the way to take in breathtaking views over this geological phenomenon, or explore the area on foot. Multi-day hiking trails along the floor of the Fish River Canyon can be pre-arranged through one of the sister lodges, in season.

Back at the lodge, you can take a dip in the dam-turned-pool, complete with nearby windmill, and soak up the quiet bush setting. Browse the quaint gift shop or set off on a walking trail from Canyon Roadhouse to look out over the arid plains and hills. Embark on guided nature drives or walks in the mornings and afternoons, or enjoy a guided sundowner drive in Gondwana Canyon Park at the end of the day. Horse riding can be arranged and guests are free to venture out in their own vehicles. The filling station at the lodge offers a comforting reassurance.

Getting There

If you are travelling overland, drive along the main dirt road (the C37) from/to the Fish River Canyon National Park and you will come across the red roofs and old truck sign that mark the roadhouse about 15km from the Hobas entrance to the national park.

The fly-in option is to take a charter flight to the airstrip at Canyon Lodge, and transfer 8km to the roadhouse.
