Windhoek is the social, economic, political and cultural hub of Namibia. Centrally located, it is on the highlands at around 1,700 metres (5,600 ft) above sea level. Its climate is semi-arid. Days are warm to very hot, ranging from 20 °C (68 °F) in July to 31 °C (88 °F) in January. Winter temperatures can range between −5 to 18 °C (23 - 64 °F). Nights can be chilly and very cold before dawn. Snow is highly unusual.
